Happy National Running Day!

Happy National Running Day, lovely readers! Who’s going to join me for a run in the sun today?

Before you lace up, I want to tell you about this AWESOME running app that I’ve been using called Charity Miles. All you do is download the free app from the App Store, select your favorite charity (She’s the First is an EXCELLENT choice), click start and get moving!

The app uses GPS to track how far you’ve run, walked or biked. (Meaning it doesn’t work on a treadmill or stationary bike so you need to go outside!)

But the best part? For every mile you walk, run or bike, 25 cents is donated to the charity of your choice! Not only is it 100% free for you, but it also gives you some extra motivation to get out there and exercise! It’s a win-win.

When you select She’s the First, every mile that you run equals 25 minutes of education for a deserving girl in a developing country. So far my running has earned almost 5 hours worth of education!

I run to support girls’ education! What motivates you? Leave a comment below!

I’m Back!

Happy June, lovely readers! I know I’ve been gone for a while, but I’m back and I’m here to stay! There’s so much to tell, but where to begin?

Well, I guess the most important thing is that I graduated from The College of New Jersey!

Graduation

Highest Honors, baby!

It feels so weird to be done with school. I miss my friends and my roommate terribly, but I don’t miss all the homework! Now that I’m back in good ol’ Jersey I can catch up on my ever-growing reading list. Right now I’m reading “I Shouldn’t Be Telling You This” by former Cosmo EIC Kate White. I’m hoping the tips in this witty book will help me land my dream magazine job! (Fingers crossed!)

Now that I’m home indefinitely (or at least until I can land a job and move to the Big Apple), I’ve been spending my days applying for jobs. So far no luck, but I’m not giving up hope! (By the way, if you happen to know anyone in the magazine/web/publishing industry I’d be forever grateful if you could pass along my resume!) I’ve only been out of school for two weeks, but it feels like an eternity.

But on the plus side, I’ve started running again! It feels great to be out there, even if it is ungodly hot outside. And I finally bought a new pair of sneaks! With the help of a lucky find on Pinterest, I even learned how to relace them so my toes don’t fall asleep while running. They’re nice and colorful and make me happy whenever I lace up.

What do you think?

What do you think?

I also got some new shorts, shirts and sports bras. Nothing really matches but I like all the bright colors anyway. Since I stopped running towards the end of the semester I decided to start the C25K app from the beginning again. This time I’m going to finish it!

Hmm… what else can I tell you… oh yeah! Remember all those costumes I was busy with this semester? Well, all that hard work paid off! I won Best Costumes for the 2012-2013 ACT season. They even gave me a pretty certificate! Speaking of theatre, while I’m searching for that dream job, I’ll be working at a local theater camp. This season the kiddos are putting on Willy Wonka, Jr. and Beauty and the Beast, Jr. I’m ecstatic about Beauty and the Beast because it is my favorite Disney movie! I’ll be sure to post lots of pictures!

Well that’s it for now! I’ll post again real soon. Tomorrow I’m going to see Cinderella on Broadway and I’ll be sure to tell you all about it!

A New Pair of Shoes

It’s time for a new pair of running shoes! I hate to admit it but I’ve been wearing an old pair of Asics that I’ve had since my days of high school gym class. Needless to say, they’re a little worn out. Since I’m serious about running I’ve decided to treat myself to a new pair of sneaks. I really like my old Asics so I’m going to stick with the brand.

I secretly want this pair

tie-dye sneakers(they’re SO cool!)

But they are a tad expensive, so I think I’m going to go with these

Here’s to hoping that what they say about Cinderella will be true for me!

Run the World, Sponsor a Girl

I’d like to introduce you to someone very special.

Anita

Anita

Meet Anita.

Anita is a 2nd grader in Nepal. She loves math and reading and has big plans for her future. Anita dreams of becoming a doctor when she grows up, but first she needs to graduate from school.

On April 14th, I’ll be running in my first 5K. I’m not running just to get into shape, I’m running to send girls to school — girls like Anita.

Training for the Run the World with She’s the First 5K started three weeks ago and it hasn’t exactly been a walk in the park. Week 1 my running partner gave up. Week 2 it rained. But whenever I face a bump in the road, I think of Anita and all the other girls who desperately want the chance to go to school. I keep running.

Just two months after I co-founded a chapter of She’s the First at my school (a non-profit that sponsors girls’ education in the developing world), our little club baked and sold over 1,000 cupcakes — enough to send three girls to school in Nepal. Anita is one of those girls.

My goal for this semester is to sponsor three more scholars through our Run the World 5K. These girls deserve an education so they can make their dreams come true.

If you’d like to help me sponsor girls in Nepal, girls like Anita, please consider supporting me here. 100% of the donations go directly to girls’ sponsorship.

C25K Day 1: Mud, Sweat & Tears (of Joy!)

C25KThanks to the advice of a very helpful reader, today I started C25K – a program designed to get anyone from couch potato to 5K runner in 8 weeks. All you do is download the C25K app and while you’re running a voice will interrupt your music to tell you when to slow down to a walk and when to speed up to a run. Even though it was raining today, I tried it for the first time felt like I got a really good workout. By the time the voice said “workout complete” I was covered in mud and sweat and was crying tears of joy — I was so proud of myself for actually running in the rain. I hope the weather is nicer tomorrow, but either way I know I’ll run.

My running gear!

My running gear!

In the afternoon I bought a new running shirt and headband. I can’t wait to wear them running tomorrow! It’s a little scary to think that I’m actually investing money in this, but I know that I’ll keep it up. We are planning to have the She’s the First TCNJ 5K the second weekend in April — giving me just enough time to train. I just keep thinking about all the little girls that we can send to school just by running and it makes my heart soar.

A bumpy start

As I mentioned before, one of my roommates promised me that we would run together at least three days a week and in exchange for her giving up smoking, I promised I’d give up chocolate. Things didn’t turn out quite the way we planned.

She only ran with me that first day and she never even went a whole day without smoking. After a week of me begging her to run with me again, I realized that I was wasting my time. I finally came to the conclusion that if I wanted to do this, I would have to do it on my own. So that’s what I’m doing.

I find it much harder to run alone, especially since I’m still not sure how to pace myself. One day I “ran” the entire loop of my school without stopping or slowing down. I was so proud of myself, but the next day when my legs weren’t even sore, I realized that I was jogging much too slow. Today I picked up the pace from the start so that wouldn’t happen again, but had to slow down to a walk twice before I could finish. I must have been going too fast. (It was also really windy outside.)

Do any of you runners out there have any tips for learning how to pace yourself?

Run the World Playlist

I’m kind of new to this whole “exercise” thing, so I definitely need an awesome playlist to get me pumped every time I run. And since I’m training for the “Run the World with She’s the First” 5K, what could be better than a girl power playlist?

  • Run the World (Girls) – Beyonce
  • Girl on Fire – Alicia Keys
  • Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You) – Kelly Clarkson
  • Single Ladies – Beyonce
  • Firework – Katy Perry
  • Survivor – Destiny’s Child
  • Only Girl (In the World) – Rihanna

So far I’m absolutely loving this playlist. What’s your favorite girl power song? Let me know in the comments below!
